In 1987, Nobel laureate Robert Solow observed, “You can see the computer age everywhere but in the productivity statistics.” That statement captured the frustration of a generation of executives who invested heavily in IT yet saw little measurable return.

As a CIO in the late 1980s, I lived that paradox firsthand. Enterprises were deploying technology, mainframes, early networks, plant systems, and office automation, but in fragmented silos.
