A friend and client recently asked me: “Honorio… at this stage of your life and career, why start a new company? Why bring all this IP to market, file for patents, and trademark frameworks? Haven’t you earned the right to slow down?” I laughed and said, “Ask my wife. She keeps telling people she has never seen me this excited about a project or a job in my entire career.” And she is right (don’t tell her I said that). To prove the point, I often tell people that the last time I felt this level of excitement and purpose was more than half a century ago, when my career began with NASA. Even though I have had a long and fascinating career since then, leading major enterprises, building technologies, and driving transformations across industries, nothing has matched the sense of wonder and renewal I feel right now. I have always been a space buff. I remember being a 12-year-old boy in Cuba, sitting by the radio, listening to the crackling broadcasts of the Gemini spaceflight launches. Those moments captured the essence of human curiosity, boldness meeting discipline, and imagination meeting precision. They planted in me a belief that technology, when driven by vision, could change what it means to be human. So, you can imagine the emotion I felt on my first day at NASA, reporting to the Kennedy Space Center, a kid who once dreamed of space now standing where dreams took off into outer space. That emotion is exactly what I feel now, half a century later, as I build ExperienceBypass™ and CLEARED AI™. After fifty years leading technology and transformation from NASA simulators to global enterprises, I have never felt more alive, curious, or driven. I have survived cancer twice and endured four major surgeries in the last ten years. God has not called me yet, and I do not think that is accidental. I believe I am here to share what I have learned, translated into the new language of commoditization of wisdom, purpose, and impact.
The Fear Is Real, But Misplaced
A C-level client recently confided in me, “Most of my peers are still afraid of AI. Too many failed projects. Too much hype.” That fear is real but misplaced. I have seen it before: the anxiety of the early internet, the resistance to ERP, the confusion around analytics, the skepticism of cloud. Each wave began in fear and ended in transformation. AI is the next wave, faster, deeper, and more pervasive, and like space exploration once was, it is a test of imagination, courage, and leadership.
The Facts Behind the Shift
The global signals are undeniable: • 40% of jobs worldwide are exposed to AI automation (International Monetary Fund). • 170 million new roles will emerge by 2030 (World Economic Forum). • Up to $4.4 trillion annual productivity upside (McKinsey & Company). • 78% of companies already use AI in some form (Stanford Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence Index). • $109 billion in U.S. AI investment – ten times China’s level (Stanford HAI Index Report). This is not a fad. It is the structural reprogramming of how enterprises learn, decide, and execute.
What is Really Holding Leaders Back
Across industries, I keep seeing the same three barriers: 1. Legacy Thinking – treating AI as another IT project. 2. Cultural Fear – mistaking automation for elimination. 3. Ethical Paralysis – freezing progress instead of governing it. AI does not fail; operating models do. That realization is what led me to create CLEARED AI™.
Why I Built CLEARED AI™
After decades as a CIO, CTO, and CEO, I saw the same pattern repeat: Companies did not fail because the algorithms were wrong; they failed because the organizations were not aligned to use them. So, I founded ExperienceBypass™ and created CLEARED AI™, a structured, ethical, and scalable operating model for becoming an AI-Enabled Enterprise™. It is built on seven imperatives: • Clarify strategies, decision models, and human-AI boundaries. • Lead with unified governance through an AI & Technology Office. • Engage the workforce by training them to leverage and supervise, not fear, AI. • Architect a connected, data-rich, AI-Native infrastructure. • Refine / Realize measurable value through Decision Velocity and the AI-Enabled Enterprise Index™. • Evolve (Ethics) with transparency, fairness, and accountability. • Deliver / Sustain through disciplined governance and continuous improvement. CLEARED AI™ is not theory. It is the culmination of fifty years of transformation, distilled into one framework, a launchpad for responsible intelligence.
Why File Patents and Trademarks at 73
Some people smile when they hear I am still filing patents and trademarks. It is about responsibility, safeguarding the intellectual property behind CLEARED AI™, the AI-Enabled Enterprise™, and the AI-Enabled Enterprise Index™ (AIEEI™) so these frameworks can be applied consistently, taught responsibly, and scaled with integrity. This work is meant to outlive me and to give structure to how enterprises transform intelligently and ethically in the years ahead.
Ideas inspire. Frameworks scale. Systems endure.
The AI-Enabled Enterprise Index™ – My Dream for a Global Standard
The AI-Enabled Enterprise Index™ (AIEEI™) measures how far an organization has progressed toward being truly AI-Enabled™ across clarity, leadership, engagement, architecture, refinement, ethics, and delivery. My dream is for it to become a global benchmark, a trusted measure of progress that goes beyond hype: • Job seekers asking, “What is your company’s AI-Enabled Index™ score?” • Investors evaluating companies by their AI maturity and ethical orchestration. • Boards and regulators using it to track responsible innovation. If financial accounting defined the industrial era, AI-maturity accounting will define the intelligent one. And publishing this reflection on my 73rd birthday feels symbolic. After half a century helping organizations measure performance, I now want to help them measure progress.
AI Is Personal
AI has not replaced me; it has recharged me. It has made me a student again. I learn from data scientists half my age, mentor executives once my peers, and experiment daily. The same wonder I felt listening to Gemini, Apollo, and the Space Shuttle take flight, I feel again, watching enterprises lift off into new dimensions of intelligence. At seventy-three, I am not slowing down. I am scaling up.
Closing Thought
After cancer, surgeries, and countless comebacks, I have learned every day is an extension, not an entitlement. God has not called me yet. So, my mission continues: To teach. To build. To lead. To prove that reinvention has no expiration date.
To my fellow leaders, especially those who, like me, have been building and leading long enough to remember every major wave of change: Do not let this one pass you by. You do not need to fear AI. You need to lead it, with judgment, curiosity, and courage. AI will not replace you; it will magnify what you already know. It will not erase your experience; it will encode it for the next generation. It will not end leadership; it will clarify it. After fifty years in this profession, I can say with conviction that this is the most extraordinary moment of our careers. At seventy-three, I am not retiring. I am continuing the mission. From Space to AI, inviting others to bring their wisdom, ethics, and vision into this new frontier. Because clarity, ethics, and courage remain the most powerful technologies we will ever have. Follow me for insights on CLEARED AI™, the AI-Enabled Enterprise™, and the AI-Enabled Enterprise Index™ (AIEEI™).
